BUSINESS LAW | NEGOTIATIONS IN SINGAPORE

I’ve always liked to negotiate. In my work as a lawyer, and in life in general. My favorite part? Trying to understand the intentions behind people’s communication. From the words said, the words not said, the expressions, the gestures, the context. And understanding each other is the key to coming to a good agreement for all parties... and to living a better life. This is what I’ve learned from my first negotiation in Singapore.

1. POSITIVE ATTITUDE

Meaning negotiating with a smile, quiet tones, and cordial words, without affecting the determination to reach your business goal.

In Singapore’s culture, it is important to always keep your cool and control your emotions.

Therefore, business negotiations are usually friendly and calm. Expressions of dissatisfaction, complaints, or loud answers are perceived as a lack of self-control, can make you lose face, and thereby damage the negotiations.

The best strategy to reach a good agreement is to maintain a positive attitude and pursue the commercial goal with patience and persistence.

2. PEOPLE FIRST

Meaning showing interest toward your interlocutors.

Today, we need to work at a very fast pace, and it is easy to get distracted, inattentive.

In Singapore, I discovered many traditions giving importance to people. For example, the exchange of business cards. When meeting someone for the first time, it is important to accept his or her business card using both hands and making eye contact, and then examine it carefully. Not reading someone’s business card can be considered an insult.

3. FOOD

Meaning building a strong business relationship... with food.

Dulcis in fundo, I experienced the business breakfasts, lunches, aperitifs, and dinners. In Singapore, eating together is a way to strengthen the business relationship. A moment to communicate important information, or to resolve misunderstandings. And it works! This is a tradition I have to put into practice here too. Maybe for the negotiations of your business contracts? Whenever you're ready, I can help you negotiate that agreement you hope for. Click here to schedule an appointment.
